It is the traveller's responsibility to ensure they hold valid travel documents for every country on their itinerary, including transit stops. Airlines may deny boarding if your documents do not meet the entry requirements of your destination. We strongly recommend checking requirements well in advance of your travel date.
Passport requirements
Most countries require your passport to meet certain conditions at the time of entry. While rules vary by destination, the following are common requirements:
- Validity — your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of departure from the destination country. Some countries enforce this strictly, even for short stays.
- Blank pages — many immigration authorities require at least two blank visa pages in your passport for entry stamps. Check your passport before travelling and renew if necessary.
- Condition — your passport must be undamaged. Torn pages, water damage, or a damaged cover may result in your passport being rejected at the border.
- Name matching — the name on your booking must match the name in your passport exactly. If your legal name has changed since your passport was issued, update your passport before travelling or contact us to correct your booking details.
Visas and entry requirements
Visa requirements depend on your nationality, destination, and length of stay. Some countries offer visa-free entry or electronic travel authorisations for Australian passport holders, while others require a visa obtained in advance.
The Australian Government's Smartraveller website provides up-to-date travel advisories and entry requirements for every country. We recommend checking it before every international trip: smartraveller.gov.au.
Transit visas
If your itinerary includes connections through a third country, you may need a transit visa even if you are not leaving the airport. Transit visa requirements vary widely and depend on your nationality, the country you are transiting through, and how long you will be in the airport.
Always check the transit requirements for every country on your route, not just your final destination. Your airline may also verify transit documentation at check-in and deny boarding if requirements are not met.
Australian residents returning home
If you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, ensure your Australian passport is current before departing. You can check your passport status, renew, or apply for a new passport through the Australian Passport Office: passports.gov.au.
Permanent residents travelling on a foreign passport should confirm their resident return visa is valid before leaving Australia. Re-entry may be refused without a valid visa.
