Australia travel guide

Destination highlights and practical tips to help you plan your next Australian trip.

Guide by Volobase

Australia is a continent of contrasts — from tropical rainforests in the north to temperate coastlines in the south, from red desert outback to cosmopolitan cities that rank among the world's most liveable. The best time to visit depends on where you are headed: the northern states (Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australia) have a dry season from May to October, while the southern states (New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania) enjoy their warmest weather from November to March. No matter the season, there is always a region worth exploring.

Given the sheer size of the country, domestic flights are the most practical way to cover long distances. A flight from Sydney to Perth takes around five hours — roughly the same as London to Istanbul. Airlines operate frequent services between all major capitals and many regional centres, making it easy to combine multiple destinations into a single trip. Volobase helps you compare fares across carriers in real time, with transparent AUD pricing, so you can focus on choosing the right itinerary rather than decoding hidden fees.

Practical tips

Currency

The Australian dollar (AUD) is the local currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and contactless payment is standard across most businesses. ATMs are readily available in cities and major towns.

Tipping

Tipping is not expected in Australia. If you receive exceptional service at a restaurant, a tip of five to ten per cent is appreciated but entirely optional. There is no obligation to tip taxi drivers, hotel staff, or baristas.

Power plugs

Australia uses Type I plugs with three flat pins in a triangular arrangement. The standard voltage is 230 V at 50 Hz. Bring a travel adapter if your devices use a different plug type.

Driving

Australians drive on the left side of the road. If you plan to hire a car, an international driving permit (IDP) is recommended alongside your home licence. Road conditions are generally excellent on major routes.

Emergency

Dial 000 (triple zero) for police, fire, or ambulance anywhere in Australia. You can also dial 112 from a mobile phone, which works even without a local SIM card or network coverage.

Time zones

Australia spans three time zones: AEST (east), ACST (central, 30 minutes behind AEST), and AWST (west, two hours behind AEST). Some states observe daylight saving between October and April, which can shift the offsets.
